Christ Is Eternal Life

Jesus was talking to some Pharisees and he said, "You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!" (John 5:39).

The greatest desire of these pharisee have always been eternal life. They search for it, dream about it and they wait eagerly for it. They seem to be obsessed with it and they would do anything to get it. They thought the law was the way to eternal life so they adhere to it. To show how desperately they desire eternal life they became extremely strict in their adherence to the law. Alas, they became legalistic and hypocrisy enslaved them. They became so blinded that even when the eternal life came they couldn't recognize it. Jesus, the eternal life, was standing right in front of them and they never realized it, there is the very thing they desperately crave for and they didn't even notice. They thought eternal life is this thing or that thing but eternal life was never a thing, it had always been and will always be a person. The Scripture isn't the eternal life, it only points to the eternal life which is Jesus Christ.

"This one [Jesus] who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us." (1John 1:2).

Eternal life is not the law or its strict practices, eternal life is not a list of don't and dos, it is not some kind of doctrine or system. It is not something that is waiting for you somewhere in the future. Eternal life is now, it is here and it is a living breathing person.

Jesus went further to say, "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." (John 17:3).Eternal life is knowing God, as long as we are in that pursuit of knowing God then we have eternal life. But the moment we stop knowing God or stop fellowshipping with Him then we have disconnect from eternal life. Paul at his very old age advise Timothy and said, "Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you," (1Tim 6:12). God has called us into fellowship with Him and that fellowship is eternal life. We remain in that fellowship we hold tightly to our desire to know Him. The moment we stop that is the moment we let go of eternal life.

Eternal life is not about knowing the Bible but above knowing the person. Eternal life is not having many gifts of the Spirit neither is it being Mister perfect (self-righteousness). Eternal life is not going to church regularly, paying your tithe and doing daily devotion. But eternal life is knowing a living person. It is not knowing a system, a religion, or a theology. Eternal life is relationship with God, it is fellowship with the Father — a relationship that is only possible through Christ. It is a kind of fellowship where we come to know the personality of God as revealed by our Lord Jesus. Yes, eternal life is centred around the Christ, in fact it is nothing else but the person of Christ.
