Christ Is Our Method

"And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:4-6).

I hear Christians always asking this question, what is the way? What is the way to live without sin, what is the way to live a victorious Christian life, what is the way to financial prosperity, what is the way to get God's blessings, what is the way to get a good wife, to live a happy marriage life, to have a God-fearing family? They ask for the way, the method that they can apply to get these things that they desire. Most of the time they are looking for some kind of procedure, a methodology, some keys, a step-by-step guide etc. But no, the way is not some kind of laid out procedures, it is a person.

The Jews had always desired the things of God and as a result of their search they created several ways. There were several sects, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Essenes, the Zealots etc. Each of them representing a way, a method to getting the things of God. And when Christianity started they assume it to be another way (Acts 19:9,23; 22:4; 24:14,22). The Jews were a people desperately looking for a way — a way to get that which God had promised them but as humans they continue to make the mistake of pursuing methodologies and doctrines. We find the same in the church today, you continue to hear sermons like; the five steps to get a perfect marriage partner, the seven keys to prosperity, the step to living a holy life, the ten principles of a happy marriage life etc.

We continue to pursue methods, steps, keys and all kinds of laid out procedures. But the way to getting anything from God is not methodology or keys, it is a person. Christ is our method, he is our key, our principle, our steps, our doctrine and our procedure in getting anything from God. The way to get anything from God is not by following a laid down method but by getting intimate with the person of Jesus Christ. It is intimacy with Jesus Christ that would bring us fullness of God. It is all about relationship not principles and keys, it has always been about relationship. Let us look onto this Jesus and desire intimacy with him more than anything else.
