We continue on this series on fixing our eyes on Jesus. Psychologist will tell you that when you refuse to express or release certain emotions it will affect you in one way or the other, even socially. As such it advices that you just find away to vent your anger, find something to channel that emotion, to release or unleash it. But we are called to die to that which carnal. No, not to redirect it, but to die to it. Psychology only sees man as flesh, and personality as a byproduct of past trauma and hurts. As Christians we are not slaves to our flesh and emotions. We have become that which is born of the Spirit, the heavenly sons which sits far above all things including flesh and the emotions of the flesh.
"that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (John 3:6).
You are to rule over your flesh and the emotions of your flesh, you are not to be controlled and remoted by every emotion that passes through your heart.
"that one 'will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery' --just as I have received authority from my Father." (Rev 2:27).
Yes, you have been given the same authority that Jesus has. You are seated far above all things to rule with a mighty arm and a rod, smashing to pieces that which does not conform to Christ. Smash that anger, that jealousy, that envy, that depression etc. put an end to it, quench it immediately, you have the power to do so within you. "Oh, I just feel so depressed, I don't know what to do, I just can't shake it off", stop whinny like a baby, just grow up and take dominion over your flesh.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Phi 4:6).
We are not to allow circumstances determine how we feel, rather let the reality in Christ determine how you feel. Again, it is not what is happening around you that should determine how you feel, rather it is what is happening in Christ that should influence your emotions. What is in Christ, what is God doing inside of you, what is He telling you? This is what should determine how you feel. We are spiritual people, not people of the flesh—mere flesh and blood, toss about by everything that comes their way.
"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." (Phi 4:8).
Take hold of your eyes and fix it on that which is pure, lovely, admirable and worthy of praise. Fix your eyes on the joy of the Lord, do not lose the joy of your salvation, do not allow any situation or circumstances take that joy away from you. Hold on to it, let your gaze rest on it, refuse to look at any other thing but this wonderful salvation of the Lord. Gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, the greatness of his glory and power, the riches of his love towards you, and his rock solid faithfulness.
"But I have trusted in your steadfast love, my heart finds joy in your salvation." (Psa 13:5).
"My soul will find joy in the LORD and be joyful about his salvation." (Psa 35:9).
"my mouth is open wide over my haters; because my joy is in your salvation." (1Sam 2:1).
You are not obligated to give yourself to that depressing, you have been bought with a price and you belong to the Lord now. Only He has right over you, let him have you, fix your gaze on him and enjoy this romance with him. He will deal with your problem, you are not alone anymore, you now have a Father and a Lover. Your husband (the Lord) is obligated to taking care of you, he is no infidel, he knows his responsibility and he knows how to fulfill them.
Focus on the romance with him, enjoy that sweet fellowship, and in the midst of that fellowship you will get direction, you will get wisdom, he would teach you what to do and how to go about the problem or challenge. First rest in him, and out of this rest will spring riches that will bring you to glory. Abide in the rest no matter what. Let the joy of the Lord flood your heart and quench every emotion that is not Christ.
