With death and darkness comes the spirit of rebellion; that attitude that is always trying to rebel against God, insisting on following it own way. Its there, inside every one of us, it comes with the corruption of death that spreads to us all.
"Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned" (Rom 5:12).
In sin is death and in death is that attitude of rebellion, that urge of going your own way. It is the reason many refuse to give their lives to Christ, they just can't submit to his Lordship, they want to have their own way all the time, they can't conceive submitting their will to God. Even those who come to Christ and given themselves to be God's people, they still struggle with rebellion in their members.
In their hearts they have decided that God's will would reign over them, but yet they still find themselves rebelling and going their own way. They try to set their affection on God, instead it is rebelling and desiring something else, they try to fix their minds on God, rather it strays and wonder off into something else, they try to do God's will, yet they find themselves doing something other. This rebellion has taken over their members.
If we are to be a people pleasing unto the Lord, we must have the spirit of submission. We must break free from that circle of rebellion, that addiction, that perverse disposition, and we must begin to cultivate the attitude of submission. Attitudes are developed through consistency of an action. Rebuke the spirit of rebellion and bring your members to submission. Yes, it might be very difficult but you must fight this battle, for it is the labour to rest.
"Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." (Heb 4:11).
We must rest from our tendency to rebel, our urge to insist on our own way and stray away. There is no way we can grow in Christ if we should continue this way. Labour, strive, make every effort to break free from the spirit of rebellion and cultivate the spirit of submission. It takes one step at a time; when you succeed in submitting once, you struggle to do it again, and then again, and as you remain consistent the attitude is developed. Focus on winning the battle one at a time, each step is very important, don't allow the chain of consistency break, and you would be on your way to freedom.
Stop buying the lie of the devil; that voice in your head telling you that this is just the way you are and there is nothing you can do to change it. Though you may have serious rebellious tendency today, yet still, you can get to a place of gentleness and humility, you can become as submissive as a lowly servant. You can grow to be very yielding to the Lord, you just find yourself always laying down your way, you will, for his. It becomes much easier for you, it is your attitude now, you have become a submissive person. This is true for everyone, no matter how serious your case may be, you can develop the spirit of submissiveness.
