The flesh is designed to survive. It doesn't want to die, and it will do anything to survive. When it comes to survival the flesh becomes very witty. Wisdom comes out of no where and the flesh would just be coming up with all kinds of trick just to survive. Spiritual growth means the flesh would have to die. Spiritual growth is about Christ taking over and the flesh giving way.
"My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me." (Gal 2:20).
Your old man will do anything to fight spiritual growth because it doesn't want to die. It is already dead but it doesn't want to accept that reality of being dead. The more you grow spiritually, the more than reality gain ground in you, and the old man will do anything to stop this from happening. One of the trick it uses is to distract you. Yes, and there will always be something that he can use to distract you. Though these things may seem very valid, in fact they are very serious matters.
You don't have money, hungry is killing you and you need to focus your time and energy on this, that and this. As such you don't have much time to give to the pursuit of your relationship with God and growing up into the fullness of the stature of Christ. You tell yourself that, "maybe I should just pause this spiritual thing just for a short while, so that I can quickly resolve this and this in my life". My dear, after you finish resolving that one another issue will come, and if you finish resolving that new issue another one will pop up. It just never end.
Please don't fall for that trick. I am telling you this out of experience, not just in my life but also in the life of other people that I have observed. This is a great deception, please don't fall for it. Life is filled with challenges, there will always be challenges. You just have to make up your mind now to pursue relationship with God even in the midst of your challenges. Yes, you can afford to do it, don't let the flesh deceive you. You will not die, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Phil 4:13).
I am not saying you should not do anything about the problem you are facing. You can afford to solve your issues and at the same time work on your relationship with God. You just have to make a resolve in your heart that no matter what you will make time for pursuing God. Yes, it will be very difficult at first, but it gets easier. Please, let's overcome being distracted and let's remain focused on working on our relationship with God.
The truth is that, once you get distracted like that, before you recover you would have lost your motivation, and you will be struggling when you come back to work on your spiritual growth. Now that the fire is burning, this is the best time to put your energy into this, don't allow any thing — no matter how serious it is — sway you away from this.
