Mind Renewal

"Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes." (Rom 12:1).

People are made up of ideas — things they hear while growing up, especially things that was constantly repeated to them. These things forms who they are, it becomes part of them. We pick these things from our parents, culture, media and the world around us. Usually, they are things frequently presented to us, and whether consciously or unconsciously we accept them and it became part of us. But when you were born again, you were born a new person. That person that was formed by the ideas of the world died.

We know this as Scripture truth, but you cannot practically experience it or live it out until you die to that pattern of thinking. Those ideas have structured your pattern of thinking, and your pattern of thinking formed this old man of yours. But you are dead to him, and the only way to stop living by the old man is to develop a new pattern of thinking. This is what the Bible calls the renewal of the mind. You are transformed when your pattern of thinking changes. Yes, when your mind is renewed you become a new person practically.

We want to live out the truth we see in the Bible and not just read about it. To do this we need a new pattern of thinking — one that is constituted by the reality in Christ. When your pattern of thinking becomes Christ, your behaviour will become Christ, and your whole life will become Christ. "that Christ might fill all things" (Eph 4:10), that is God’s eternal purpose, that is what he is after. Let Christ fill our lives completely.

To achieve this we will search out the reality in Christ and begin to inculcate it into us. Just knowing it is not enough. Your old and currently predominant pattern of thinking was formed over years of ideas being presented to you over and over again. To achieve a radical change and overcome this predominant pattern of thinking you need to bury your mind in the truths of the reality in Christ. Let those truths be inculcated into you. By "inculcate", I mean constantly repeated to you until it formed into a new pattern of thinking.

When your pattern of thinking is transformed by the truths of the reality in Christ, you will become awaken to that reality. You will begin to interact with this reality and living it out. Yes, you will grow into oneness with the reality in Christ.
