We have the reality in-Christ, we also have our old reality (the kind of life we were living before we were saved), and then finally we have our current reality. Our current reality is the transition from our old reality to the in-Christ reality. The goal of the Christian is to have his reality come into perfect union with the reality in Christ. When this happens the Christian gets to always experience and manifest the reality in Christ.
When we got born again life was born in us embodied by the new man—Christ in us. However, there is a shadow (an illusion) of the old man, embodying the carnal nature, that nature of death.
“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” (Eph 4:22-24).
We must forsake the old man and put on the new man. The old man is the old reality, and the new man is the reality in Christ. The Scripture says you (our current reality) must put on (come into union with) the new man (the reality in Christ). According to the Scripture, this process requires you to be renewed in the spirit (attitude) of your mind. Now what does that mean?
The attitude, the disposition, of your mind must be renewed. This means you must find out more about this new man in Christ and you must start to think like him. Yes, you must take on the attitude of his mind and start to think like him. This is how you put on the new man and come into union with the reality in Christ. Some of us have role models who we want to be like. In order to achieve this goal of becoming like this role model we must find out everything about the role model. You find out about his lifestyle and then you try to imitate it.
Most importantly you find out about how he thinks. You interview him or watch interviews of him, and you find out about how he thinks. Then you try to imbibe that kind of thinking. You renew your mind and take on his mental disposition and his attitude. If you can achieve this perfectly then you will look and behave exactly like your role model. In Christ we are not trying to act like another man, rather we are trying to finally be ourselves.
"put on the new man," (Eph 4:24).
This new man is the real you. To put on the new man, you must start by putting on his mental disposition and start thinking like him. When you start thinking like him, then you will start acting like him, and that is how your reality becomes one with the reality in Christ. We would discuss how to achieve this in another lesson.
